The people of downtown Jersey City elected James to represent them as the Ward E City Councilperson on Dec. 5th 2017 for a term through Dec. 31st, 2021. Prior to this position, James served as an aide to the Mayor of Boston, where he utilized technology to solve persistent problems like potholes and snow removal. James also designed an affordable housing policy for the state of Massachusetts and the foundation for a performance management system for three departments for then Newark Mayor Cory Booker. James earned his Master in Public Policy from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and his BA from Pomona College. He is currently an adjunct professor in political science and urban policy at three Jersey City universities: St. Peter’s University, New Jersey City University & Hudson County Community College.
James met the love of life, Gabrielle Ramos, at graduate school, bonding over a shared commitment to make the world a better place. They welcomed their daughter, Camila Nicole Solomon, to the world on November 4th, 2017. James is also Hodgkin’s Lymphoma survivor, who has been in remission since 2016. That ordeal reminded him that he should spend his time doing what he loves. And James loves teaching and practicing public policy to make a difference in the lives of his students and citizens.
James fights for progressive values. From knocking on doors on behalf of Barack Obama in rural Missouri to operating a free legal clinic in West Chicago to leading the efforts to elect Hillary Clinton in Jersey City, James believes in backing up his values with hard work. James was a leader in the Evict Trump/Kushner movement as well as other progressive causes in Jersey City.
